How to Find a Perfect Domain Name at the Perfect Price

A Perfect Domain Name

Are You in Search for a Perfect Domain Name

Domain name is the most important part of your website. Normally, people remember websites by domain names only. A domain name helps a lot in advertisement by mouth or any other form of advertisement. Yahoo, Google, Facebook is remembered by its domain name only.

In the overcrowded web world, it is very hard to find a suitable domain name. As most of the names we check for the domain name are already taken. So, one have to think out of the box to get a perfect domain name.

It is to be noted that almost 90 % of domain names or even more which are registered are either parked (to be sold) or else used by websites with daily visitors less than 10. As of 29th October, 2012, there are in total 132,406,473 registered domain names. Almost all the domain names with single word is owned by some influential web giants. These are called Premium domains. Many of these are not in use or redirect to some other website.

Let’s talk about features that a good domain name should possess.

Match your website name

The foremost important thing about a website name and domain name is that both should match. If someone finds your website through a search engine, he will not look for the domain name to memorize it. Rather, he will see the name of the website written in bold. If the name of the website is “Fire Fighter“, but the domain name is TheFireFighter.com. Next time when the visitor will try to go to your website, chances are heavy that he/she will type FireFighter.com instead of TheFireFighter.com and that’s it, one customer goes to your competitor’s website instead of yours.

If you have a business with brand name and you want a website for it, it will be best if you could get the domain name with the same name as your brand name. However, one should understand how much important is the domain name matching your brand name and how much more the revenue will be if both matches. Like take the example of the latest James Bond movie Skyfall. The official website for this movie is hosted with domain name Skyfall-Movie.com. How much revenue the producer of this movie will lost due to naming the website as Skyfall-Movie.com rather than Skyfall.com. I doubt it to be even a single cent.

In the search of a perfect domain name at perfect price. The example of Skyfall is the perfect example to understand importance of price. In the present world of search engines, people memorize the names of only those domain names which they think they have to visit again and again. What I will suggest is to go for same name as your brand strictly only if it is an internet specific product. Like take the example of SEOElite.com. This website is promoting a software named SEO Elite. Hence, if they choose TheSEOElite.com as their domain name chances are visitors will go to SEOElite.com if they see link of both the website in Google.

Match your contents

The domain name gives an idea of contents of the website. Like one will visit WallColours.com expecting it will contain information about wall painting ideas and combinations. If the contents will differ the expectations of the visitors, they will not even wait for a sec to go away from your web page. This is the reason why generic domain name are so highly priced. Both search engine and internet users think that Perfume.com would contain perfumes related contents. If the content satisfies both, the website will be popular both among the visitors and the search engines. However, If the content is even slightly differs from expectation it will lost its position in Google search result and visitors satisfaction.

Easy to memorize and type

This is a characteristic which everyone wants in their domain name as must. Google, Yahoo is perfect example of this. Even if in the dictionary there is no word as used by you for the domain name. It should be easy to memorize and type. Like Flippa.com, Sedo.com.

Nothing matters if your content is good

The foremost important characteristic for a website is not its name or domain name. It is the content. Every search engine will give you ranking and send the traffic based on your contents. Website like WikiLeaks or LinkedIn are popular due to its contents. Hence, spend optimum amount of money for a perfect domain name and extra for the content’s quality.

Now first estimate the money you are willing to pay to buy a domain name. It should be noted that domains are available at as low as $ 1 (Godaddy limited period offer). If you search well anytime you may find a domain at around $ 2. My point is original price of the domain is very low. A domain registrar’s basic cost to register a domain is just 18 ¢ as ICANN fees. Other features like privacy protection, etc. are surplus cost. First think whether you want a fresh domain, existing domain, expired/deleted domains. I’ll cover all of them here.

Fresh Domains

Fresh domains are cheapest. However, forget that you will get a short and simple domain name easily. It is impossible to find a single word domain name as available. You need to use some trick to find a satisfactory domain name. Here are few points and tricks. Please mention in comments if you know any extra tricks.

  • It is not required that your domain name should be .com only. There are many well-known domain names which are .org, .info or .net. However, this is also true that in top 100 Alexa websites, there are only two .org websites (Wikipedia.org and CraigList.org), no .net websites and apart from .com only country specific TLD websites are available. But, it is not due to some preference given to .com by Google in ranking and they are getting extra traffic. Instead, it is just because .com is the most preferred TLD among webmasters.
  • One can find a nice domain name by using two or three different words. For those who are new to domain name search this might look a good idea. However, this is a very old trick. Hence, it’s not easy to find a fresh domain name by this method too. Combination of two usual words are hard to be find free for .com. Like PerfectPrice.com, SolidChair.com, etc. But, if you are OK with other international TLDs like .org, .net or .info. You might get it.
  • If we go in the depth of a domain name science, we must know rules for choosing a domain name. A domain name could be formed using English alphabets, numbers 0 – 9, and the symbol “-”. The length of the domain name should be maximum 63 characters excluding extension. The domain name can neither start nor end with the symbol. Symbol can be repeated for max two times like a–z.com, a–b–c–d–e.com.
  • After using the above information, there are enormous number of domain names you could find. E.g. numbers are used by many like 1and1.com or One2Three.com. However, there are various special numbers which are easy to remember. But, hardly in use. Like 786, 512, 111, 1234, etc. One may use it with some other words to find an easy to remember domain name.
  • One can easily get a domain name spelled in any other language other than English. Like JaiHo.com (famous song from the movie Slumdog Millionaire). If you are targeting a specific country netizens. Then, it is the best way to get a suitable domain name. Even, if your target audience is not country specific you can go for those words, just it should be easy to spell and remember. The beauty of these domain names is that you can easily get a good domain name by this way. Like GetVidya.com a popular educational website in India. Get is an English word with Vidya which is a Hindi word for education.
  • Now, the last idea I’m giving is cool one. It is called Domain hack. One of the most popular example of this is Del.icio.us which now redirects to Delicious.com. This sharing website started with a cool looking sub-domain address Del.icio.us. There are many TLDs which could be used to make such a cool domain name. Like Backpa.in, Calcul.us, Anyti.me, Moroc.co, etc.

Existing Domain for Sell

While searching for domain you will found out that most of the domains which are already taken are parked or listed for sale. Their prices vary from $ 20 to thousands of dollars. Now, what are the factors which determine appropriate value for such a domain?

Buyer

The prospective buyer is the most important factor in determining the value of a domain name. A buyer who intends to develop a website related to his business would pay more than one who wants to start a totally new business for online ecommerce. Suppose a luxury car dealer whose companies name is Triangle Sales wants to buy a domain name for his company’s website. He must be happier to get the domain name TriangleSales.com than FerrariDealer.com or LuxuryCars.com. Reason is very simple and obvious. He is not trying to develop a website to sell the cars online. He wants more and more customers to come to his store to buy the car. Microsoft Corporation would not like their website’s domain as Software.com. They will spend more to get Microsoft.com than Software.com.

Last year, Facebook acquired fb.com from American Farm Bureau Federation at a whopping price of $ 8.5 million. Last time, when Facebook.com was purchased by them in 2005, its price was at $ 200,000. Only Mark Zuckerberg could tell us how much had the original domain name of Facebook TheFacebook.com cost him.

The point here is the brand and requirements determine the price of a domain name. Today eBay.com domain is worth millions, but without its brand value bay.com would have cost more to buy than eBay.com.

The point is if you think a particular domain is important for your websites. Then, the price will be determined by your ability to pay and your willingness to buy the domain name.

Keyword and Niche market relevance of the domain

Domain name which are made of keywords which represents a particular niche market is worth more than domain name which don’t have any such quality. Like HostingReviews.com, RentACar.com, Vacancy.com, etc. You don’t have to ask anyone if these domains are in use what would be contents of these websites, plus these contains exactly same words which people might search in Google. Everyone wants that the domain name should be relevant to the contents he/she is going to show on the website. A business card manufacturer will be willing to pay more if he could get a name which resembles his expertise.

There are various exception to this. Like Orkut.com, Google.com, etc. It may help if you get a domain name which explains the contents of your website. But, the world does not ends if such domain is costing more. The most important thing is contents and presentation. PayPal.com would be more successful if its domain name Pay.com. I doubt it. Twitter would have more users than Facebook due to its name, no. Twitter, Google, yahoo became popular due to its usefulness, due to its features, not due to its name, which is not even relevant to the features due to which it became popular. These are neutral words.

Hence, if you find a low priced domain name relevant to your contents or use. It’s good. Else, you can do a little more search, look for a lower priced domain and do some more work on contents.

Top Level Domain

The extension name is very important in the valuation of a domain name. Internet is still dominated by .com. There is 4x -10x difference between a .com and any other premium TLD.

The importance is not because the webmasters prefer .com. Instead it is due to the users. Netizens have normal habit to remember the domain name without its extension. Wikipedia is so much popular. Still, many visitors directly types Wikipedia.com to go to Wikipedia.org. They don’t even notice that Wikipedia is .org not .com (Wikipedia.com redirects to Wikipedia.org). While searching in Google, people will simply type Google.com. They never even cares whether the result is provided by Google.com or Google.co.uk or Google.co.in. Hence, while buying a domain name .com will cost you more to buy.

Symbol and numbers

A domain name with symbol and number is very less worth than words. TutorsForHire.com is more worthy than Tutors4Hire.com. MobileWorld.com is more valuable than Mobile-World.com. Owner of both MobileWorld.com and Mobile-World.com will use the name Mobile World as their websites name. However, the visitor will just remember name of your website and in both case they will go type MobileWorld.com.

Length of a Domain

Number of characters allowed for a domain is 63. However, one may rarely see a domain name having more than fifteen characters. The most important aspect of length of domain name is longer the domain, longer will be the time to type it. Short domain name is easy to type. Like ebay.com. But, people use copy and paste or bookmarking function for longer domain. Hence, webmasters prefer short domain name. No doubt high price of FB.com was result of this factor too.

Common Used Group Words

Domains with commonly used group words have higher value than other group of words. Like GoForIt.com, RentACar.com, GrabIt.com, etc. These are easy to remember and tell.

Backlink for a domain

There are few websites which were running full fledge before the owner thought of selling it. Now, these websites have some backlinks. If the domain name reflects a particular niche market or is keyword rich. Then, backlinks would be useful in two ways. You will have some quality backlinks for SEO, plus you may get some visitors.

Misspelled Name

Misspelled name is normally very bad choice for using as a domain name. The reason is very simple. Your visitors will find it hard to remember the name. Quality.com is easy to remember, but not qualiti.com.

In few cases where, the misspelled domain comes from misspelled word of some very popular domain which are in top 1000 websites. It is possible that you will get some traffic. But, those visitors will just left your site when they realize their mistake.

Age of a domain

Age of a domain really helps in getting higher Pagerank. However, there is one confusion here among many. Google do give some benefit to older domains. However, for them age of a domain becomes zero when it changes ownership. Hence, it plays no role in estimating the price of a domain. As there will be no benefit for the age of the domain once its WHOIS data changes.

One should keep in mind that each domain is unique. One can just estimate a price for a domain name. But, finally which domain will give you more income will not depend on its name. It will depend on the quality of work given to develop it into a quality website.

If you are looking for some premium domain name which are up for sale. Use the above search tool. Apart from points mentioned above look for a domain which are parked and are up for sale. You could even target active website with very less traffic. These websites may sell their whole website along with domain name if offered price is even close to $ 50.  Once you find that the owner is interested in selling the domain. If the asking price less than $ 100. Contact the seller directly and negotiate a deal. However, if it is more than $ 100, you can use the Godaddy Domain Buy Service as an agent to negotiate the price for domains. Normally, seller don’t know the exact value of their domain and they keep a higher price. GoDaddy being a professional will contact on your behalf the current owner of the domain and negotiate with the owner for the lowest possible price of the domain, but up to your maximum specified limit. You can try it once you find the perfect domain for you.

Expired Domain

Expired domain name is not actually option for those who are looking for domain name with fixed keywords and niche. First let me explain the whole structure for getting an expired domain name.

When a domain name registration period expires, it goes in Grace period of some fix days. This grace period varies for extensions and different registrars. During this grace period the old registrant can renew the domain without paying any extra amount. This period helps those registrants who forget somehow to renew. During this period the email and other features stop working. The domain will points to a webpage explaining the need for renewal.

After grace period, redemption period starts. During this period also, only the original registrant can renew their domain name. However, they have to pay extra money other than renewal charge.

If the original registrant do not apply for renewal even during the redemption period, after 5 days the domain name is open for fresh registration. If someone is looking for expired domain to buy, it will be achieved by registering it as fresh domain after this whole process is over. The normal time for this exercise is 75 days.

Now, it is possible to register an expired domain name after it has been deleted from the registry and open for fresh registration. However, if the demand for an expired domain is high. It will be hard to be the first to try for domain ownership just after it is again available for fresh registration.

One should use expert services like SnapNames or NameJet to snatch an expired domain just after its deletion. A domain name is deleted from the registry 5 days after the end of redemption period. Now, the deletion from the registry occurs somewhere between 11 AM to 2 PM Pacific Time. These services keep checking at regular interval through various registrars the status of deletion for the expired domain. This pinging process is done in such a way that they don’t get banned by the accredited registrars like VeriSign (for .com, .net and .name). These services are normally free. One may register at more than one place. As only one of these may catch the drop of domain names, so finally one have to pay only one of them. Once they catch the drop if no other party for the same domain name is there, the domain is yours, else it will be placed for auction. The min cost for these service will be around $ 70. If the name goes for auction it will be much costlier depending on the desperation of you and other probable buyers for the domain.

I found a very interesting thing here. If you could find any perfect domain name for you which has expired, I would suggest contact the current registrar directly and ask him to renew the domain and negotiate the terms for purchase of domain directly from him. One may say that the original registrant might have missed to renew the domain. Hence, if one contacts the buyer during grace period chances are he/she will renew it and don’t agree for selling the domain name. Or otherwise, the original registrant once learning there is a probable buyer for the domain may renew and ask for a higher price.

Now, as the domain name grace period for normal TLDs are 40 days and during this period all features of domain name are suspended. If the original registrant has missed to renew. He/she will renew within first 25-30 days. After that chances are heavy that the intention is not to renew the domain name. In the last 10-15 days try to contact the original registrant with a deal to renew the domain and sell it to you with an attractive price. Take my word this will cost you much lesser and without competition you will get the domain name. During the grace period benefit for original registrant will be more. One can negotiate and close the deal at as lower as $ 50 including transfer fees.

If the deal for renewal and sell by the original registrant is finalized during redemption period, then the cost to renew will be much higher. With addition of transfer cost and profit of original registrant the overall cost will be even higher, somewhere close to $ 100 to $ 125. One should look for this process only if he/she thinks the domain name will have more than one buyer after drop by registry. There are many aspects here. It is almost certain that original registrant thinks that the domain think that the domain name is not even worth renewal cost for him. So, even if he/she is offered double or triple the renewal cost. It is beneficial for them.

This under the table process will be good in nearly every aspect and not illegal.

As I have already mentioned in the first paragraph itself the expired domain is not for those who want the domain for some specific purpose with specific keywords for the domain. It is hard to find at any particular time a domain which is perfect for you and which has just expired. Domains are registered for a duration of one year to 10 years. Good domains are normally registered for longer duration to avoid renewal trouble every year. Hence, expired domains consists very few good and premium domains. These will in major way consist those domains which are of no use to their owners and they are making no money out of it and think they could not sell it to make some profit. But, if you could still search a domain perfect for you, it could be yours.

Deleted domains

Registering a deleted domain is just like registering a fresh domain. The benefits of registering a deleted domain is that you can get some domain names which might be an established websites with good amount of backlinks and listed in DMOZ. The domains available are those which don’t get any backorder after expiring. Hence, these domains don’t have much importance. However, as I’ve said that combination of two or three word domain names are hard to find as fresh domain. These types of domain names could be find in deleted domain names very easily. I’ve recently found a deleted domain name and purchased it at regular price of fresh domain which was much cheaper than its original worth. If you are seriously looking for a good domain name at cheap price, this is the best place to look.

Conclusion

The term “Perfect” for a domain name itself includes a lot of aspects to look. The points which are very important is how much the domain name costs and how much business one may gain or lose by going for a better or worst domain name. Buying a domain name at a price of $ 500 or $ 1,000 is not more if it is going to help you in making a brand image and earning thousands of dollars. What is best for someone should be decided by him/her only. Look at every aspect by every angle. Then, only you can decide which is the perfect domain name for you and what is its perfect price. Best of luck for your perfect domain name at the perfect price.

Most Suitable Date for JEE (Main) Online Test

You must be knowing, the name of one of the most popular exam in India, AIEEE has been renamed this year to JEE (Main). The pattern for the exam is same. However, the importance of exam has changed a lot. You may read more about the whole exam JEE in my post What is JEE 2013?

how to choose a suitable date for JEE (Main)

Choose Your Date Wisely

AIEEE had introduced option to give the exam either online or offline (paper-pencil based) in 2010. There are various benefits of giving the test online. Like:

  • One can review and change the answer at any point of time
  • The above process can be done numerous number of times
  • No. of questions attempted or unattempted could be find instantly
  • Tougher or tricky questions could be marked for review later
  • Equal time is alloted to everyone
  • No disturbance during the exam for paper work
  • Don’t need any strategy for circling the answer with pencil
  • Flexibility to choose the exam date
  • It will save Rs. 300

If someone is comfortable with computers and can sit in front of computer screen for 3 hours continuously. It is strongly recommended to go for Online Test.

Now, I’m coming to the main point of this article. How to choose the most suitable date for JEE (Main) online test?

The answer to this question is not so easy. It will differ based on your willingness to appear for JEE (Advanced).

Date Selection

JEE (Advanced) is going to be conducted on 2nd June, 2013. JEE (Main) online test is scheduled between 8th April, 2013 to 25th April, 2013. If someone is appearing for JEE (Advanced), he needs more time for JEE (Advanced) preparation. Hence, he need to appear on the earliest suitable date for the exam. Keep no confusion, the bar of 150,000 students eligibility is not at all a test for the students who are serious for JEE (Advanced). So, don’t even think that you need good amount of time to be in top 150,000 students eligible to write JEE (Advanced). If you can’t get top 150,000 for JEE (Main), don’t waste your time for JEE (Advanced).

However, if someone is just going to appear for JEE (Main), not for JEE (Advanced), he need to choose the latest date of all. So, that he could concentrate well for both 12th board and JEE (Main).

Now, if you are willing to write JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced). Don’t go for the First Day First Show. On the first two days there are chances of technical hitches during the exam. The invigilators and engineers at the test center try to familiarize themselves with the whole system of online test. Till the third day, the ambiance of test center becomes normal. Chances of hitches becomes quite less. Hence, it is recommended to choose the third day, 10th April, 2013 as your date for Online Test. However, this date is most suitable for morning slot. If you are willing to take the test in 2nd half, then go for 9th April, 2012 afternoon slot. Chances are very less of any technical problem on the second day afternoon slot. I will discuss about slot selection later.

If you are planning to appear for only JEE (Main) and you have to appear for 12th board also then choose latest dates viz 23rd or 24th April, 2013. This will give you a healthy gap for utmost preparation for JEE (Main). Plus, the pressure on your mind will be less. I didn’t recommended the last date as the invigilators would be taking this day lightly just as last working day before holidays. Remember, they would be busy with the exam for last 13 days continuously with two shifts of exams every day.

Slot Selection

Choosing the perfect slot for JEE (Main)

Don’t Get Stressed

Morning or afternoon slot plays vital role in your performance. Fundamentally, you must be knowing that the mind feels fresh in the morning hours. The thinking and analyzing capability is always higher in the morning. Overall, it is the best time to give your best shot. Remember, even if this would help you to solve just one extra question correctly. We are talking about a rank difference in hundreds to thousands. You have to give exam in the optimal state of time to deliver the best. The best from your capability means the best rank you can get in JEE (Main). However, morning or afternoon slot will not matter, if you train your body for the afternoon exam.

Those who are appearing just for JEE (Main) but are repeaters (not giving 12th board). The choice of date for you will depend on you only. As the date won’t matter for you. You might just feel relaxed from the exam pressure if you appear early. But, still if you need any suggestion, ask your query by the comment section below.

How to Prepare for JEE 2013 After Appearing for 12th Board:Part 1

Prepare for JEE 2013

Prepare for JEE 2013: Time to Work Harder

The restructuring of AIEEE and IIT JEE in 2013 is creating a lot of confusion among the minds of aspirants. It is very important to clear all the confusion. Read my article What is JEE 2013 to clear all your doubts.

Prepare for JEE 2013: Introduction

You should know that to prepare for JEE 2013, the time after 12th board is very precious. It should be utilized in the optimal way to get the best result. The time period is very short and its optimal utilization will guarantee the best rank that you are capable to achieve by giving your best shot. And, you have to give your best shot.

This time period of almost 70 days is going to decide your career’s fate. You will be among elite group of the society or average. All will depend on your performance in these 70 days. Hence, it is very important to take a systematic approach to maximize the chance of giving your best performance.

Prepare for JEE 2013: For Whom

I’m writing this article for those aspirants of JEE 2013 who are appearing for 12th board and afterwards planning to appear for both JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced). This article will not address preparation for paper 2 of JEE (Main) or aptitude test of JEE (Advanced). It will be published in two parts; first part will be about preparation for JEE (Main). Second part will address JEE (Advanced) preparation. Keep almost 15-20 different sets of simulator tests for both JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced). However, before going in detail please go through my article, Most Suitable date for JEE (Main) Online Test.

Prepare for JEE 2013: First Learn Concepts

Some years ago, I had written an article, How to prepare for IIT JEE. The article described three step for IIT JEE preparation. Even though a lot has changed since then in the format of JEE, still first two step are well enough for JEE (Advanced) preparation. I would suggest you go through the article.

I have always told the aspirants of JEE that you don’t need to prepare for the type of the questions asked. You just need to get yourself to the level of knowledge required for IIT JEE. Preparation for a particular type of question  could be done within 20 days.

IIT JEE always keeps changing. Since 2000 I am following it. Every next year there were few changes with respect to previous years. Level of question changed, pattern changed, type of questions changed. This year even the name changed to JEE (Advanced). But, style never changed. IIT always asks tricky questions. An IIT JEE aspirant of year 2000, can appear for the paper of year 2012 and get the same rank, just by preparing for not more than 10 + 20 days (10 days for going through major addition in the syllabus in 2003).

My point in all this is to get the knowledge of every portion of the syllabus before board exam. After board, just prepare for the question type asked in JEE both Main & Advanced. Any question whether, it is asked as subjective or objective is solved in the same way, just presentation of the answer differs. Hence, know how to solve any problem. Adapting according to the requirement of the presentation is not a hard task.

Prepare for JEE 2013: 12th Board is Over

Now, lets proceed to know how to be ready for JEE (Main) once 12th board exam is over. For JEE (Main) or AIEEE, I always feel it is an examination to test your speed rather than intelligence. There would be hardly any tricky questions that would be asked in its exam,. All would be formula based (or memory based). However, JEE (Advanced) or IIT JEE tests your intelligence rather than speed. Moreover, syllabus of JEE (Main) is almost same as that of 12th board. Hence, if someone has prepared well enough for 12th board, he/she could perform well in JEE (Main) after a preparation of 15-20 days.

As I have already told you through my article Most Suitable date for JEE (Main) Online Test, I feel JEE (Main) should be taken online rather than paper based and you should choose the most suitable slot to maximize your performance for both JEE (Main) and JEE (Advanced).

Now, once your board exam is over, take a break of one day and do full-day-night fun. This will totally refresh your mind from the stress of 12th board exam. As per CBSE board, I think the last exam for science stream students would be on 23rd March. It is advised to keep a gap of 15 days between the last day of 12th board exam and JEE (Main) test date. I suggested 10th April, 2013 as the most suitable date to appear for JEE (Main). Hence, those who are going to appear for CBSE board would be getting around 15-16 days for preparation of JEE (Main). After refreshing your mind, we are going to use the simulator tests that I have asked you to collect. It would be better if at least 7-10 simulator tests are computer based.

Step 1 (4-5 day):

Now, initially you need to use the paper based tests. For the first 5 days, start solving the simulator test by using all books, notes and all other means available. But, don’t go through the solution before attempting and possibly solving all the problems. Once you attempted all the questions. Check your answers and if any answer went wrong even after using all possible means. Try to understand where was the problem. Time should not be a factor. However, complete one test in one day.

This process will not be an easy one. On the first 2-3 days, it will take away all the energy. But, if done with concentration and dedication. It will work like anything. If one would go through the questions asked by the AIEEE, one can understand that the questions asked by AIEEE are formula based and could be solved easily if formula is known. This step would help you to know and memorize the formula based on the questions which are being asked by AIEEE. Further, it will revise you the syllabus in accordance with JEE (Main) syllabus. You would know the method for approaching a particular type of problems asked. It would be best if you use past years question paper for this step as simulator test. This will benefit you in the best way, as you will learn, what is asked and exactly how to solve them.

Step 2 (6-7 days):

Once you completed step 1, you would be well versed with the question types asked in AIEEE and how to solve them. I expect it would be almost 10 days left for the JEE (Main).

In this step and next, you have to learn how to attempt the questions in a time bound manner. How to manage and approach the test to score maximum? Both speed and accuracy is important. For the next 9 days sit for the test in the same time schedule in which your JEE (Main) test is. It will help your body to get used to the schedule, so that you won’t fill any physical stress on the final day. It would be best if you attempt the tests on table and chair. I recommend to use the computer based test for both this and the final step. If you don’t have so much computer based tests. Last step should be totally using computer based tests. Rests should be used for this step, along with paper based tests.

For the first 6-7 days, solve the question in the stipulated time schedule. Once the test is over, calculate your marks. Now, take a break of around 1 hour. Afterwards, first try to solve incorrect answers and try to figure out, where you made the mistakes. Next, try to solve the unattempted questions. If you gave the test in first half, then try to solve the unattempted and incorrect ones by the end of the day. If you solve it in second half, try to do so by the next day first half. If you need to refer some books or notes, do so. This whole process will improve your latency and no. of questions attempted.

Step 3 (3 days):

Till now, you would be totally stressed with the heavy workout, I suggested in the first two steps. Now, for the last 3 days, you need to give relaxation to your mind. Out of these 3 days, for the first 2 days, solve the test in the normal schedule as per your JEE (Main) timing. Check your score. But, no need to do the whole other workouts. Its time to relax. Watch TV. Play some games. If you want, for an hour or so, revise the formulas and other things which needs to memorized. But, take no stress. All of us commit errors while solving. However, it is minimized if the stress on the mind is less. The success rate of your attempted questions, makes a huge difference in the score.

I prefer the last day before the exam to be free from any study. Don’t worry. If you don’t solve the test for one day, it will not deteriorate your score. But, it will give your mind some peace. You may spend some time to memorize the formulas. Don’t spend time just watching movies or TVs or just playing games. As doing one thing for long hours will give stress to your mind. Go meet your friends. Spend some time with them. Eat healthy food and sleep at usual time.

On the final day. I expect you will be fully ready to appear for JEE (Main) and give your best shot.

IIT JEE: What should be the strategy for repeaters?

IIT is a dream for many students. Many had waited 4-5 years to crack IIT JEE. Some even spent few years in other college, and then came to IIT without any tension about year loss. But, since 2006, IIT JEE has taken few steps to filter genuine quality from repeaters.

IIT JEE committee in 2006 changes few eligibility rules for IIT JEE. These changes allow only those who have passed the qualifying exam not more than one year back. Simply we can say. Maximum two attempts are allowed for IIT JEE to any students.

Normally students, who are not both lucky and brilliant simultaneously, fail to mark an impression in first attempt of IIT JEE. I’m pointing at lucky and brilliant both. Even brilliance can’t guarantee you to be an IITian in first shot. There are lots of complications. Like you have to cover the syllabus in right time, you have to face board exams just few days back of IIT JEE, you have to quickly switch to IIT JEE syllabus after board exam. Not to say all these needs proper timing. Many loose the preparation at last steps not due to brilliance. But, due to so much complications and lack of proper guidance. Just before IIT JEE, many lose their chance to get selected. So, it needs luck with brilliance to pass IIT JEE in first shot.

I will discuss here exactly how you should prepare if you had failed in first appearance of IIT JEE. What should be the strategy? How you should study? When is the right time for pace? When you should join test series? When your revision should start? Should you join any coaching or home preparation is best? I will discuss all these points here. Also, if you want any point to be added by me raise your voice. Use comments section.

First of all, let’s decide whether you need coaching or not. Note it down that you should be associated in IIT JEE coaching once in your three-year duration of IIT JEE preparation. If you have taken any professional coaching for IIT JEE up till 12th. Now, go for home preparation. If you were not associated with coaching during 12th or 11th especially for IIT JEE, it is a good time for you to do so. Do not forget. Coaching is very important to know most about IIT JEE. Especially those who are average do well after coaching. (See this article to know how coaching help different students in IIT JEE preparation.)

One thing I want to urge all. If you think that there is some chance for you to crack IIT JEE. But, less chance in first shot. Then, go for IIT JEE coaching during 11th and 12th. Don’t leave the professional help for post-board duration. Coaching gives you a lot. But, it takes away your energy and also need much mental and physical work. Students sometime get lost in mental and physical strain they undergo during coaching. Also, you will become much more mature about IIT JEE after taking coaching. So, you could study in right way in your final shot. I will discuss more about it later in some other article.

If you are thinking to go for coaching after board exams, then, remember to give good time for self-study. Don’t get lost in assignments and hand-outs provided by your coaching. Solve them. But, also give appropriate time for IIT JEE text-books and standard problem book. Remove confusions related with concepts using full help of coaching system. IIT JEE concentrates more at those points which are loop holes for students. You can do better if you keep in mind above mentioned points. These are enough for you. Remember, coaching will take away most of your time. Still you have to work-hard restlessly.

Now, if you had already taken coaching during 12th or don’t want to join any coaching. These are for you.

After IIT JEE exam or exam period gets over. Don’t waste much time in enjoyment. Re-start your preparation after a gap of not more than 7 days.

When you start the preparation, first go for little analyze. Try to figure out which chapters need improvement and which are your best portions. Also, which book to follow? In this one year of preparation you should concentrate more on clarifying concept by solving more and more problem. Problem should be solved by books which have IIT JEE sort of problems. I would suggest go for Arihant books in Physics and Mathematics. For chemistry, Arihant books are not so much good. Try Schaum series or others like O P Tondon or O P Agrawal for physical chemistry. For Organic strictly go for Solomons & Fryhle. It is best book for Organic chemistry for IIT JEE. Use this book with its solution book. For Inorganic use Arihant. Memorize every reaction type. Go for problems. The more regularly you solve the problems. The more you will improve in Organic or Inorganic Chemistry. Not to mention, not just above books are only best books in the market. But, yeah these are most tested.

If you have material of some top institute of IIT JEE. Refer them too while reading concept from above mentioned books. Try to solve the variety of problems available. The more you get familiar with problem more you will solve the problem in IIT JEE. Remember IIT JEE don’t check your speed. You will have enough time to solve problems to secure good rank in IIT JEE. So, concentrate on practicing more and more problem. Required speed will be acquired just by practice.

Now, I’m going to tell you a very important trick you should use which would help you later in revision. While going through problems, mark the problems which are unsolved, hard or tricky. Even those which you solved, but you want to see them while revision. On an average you will get 10-15 marked questions in 100 you will attempt. Use these questions when you revise. This simple technique will boost up your revision time 2-3 folds. Normally, while revision students get confused from where to start revision. But, with this trick in use, you can just refer theory quickly from somewhere (like Brilliant tutorial provides YG File compendium or FIITJEE provides some books with GMP). Then, go through the problems you had marked earlier. Remember, it’s on to you which problem to mark. Don’t mark just hard problem. Instead, mark the problems in a way which could help you to revise in less time later. So, after solving chapters go through marked problems and see whether you can revise with those problems.

Normally, you should close first phase of detailed study, up till December to January. Then, phase 2, revision by above mentioned way till 20 – 25 days prior to exam date. For phase 2, if time permits you could also use GMP or YG Files. In last phase, solve simulator tests or sample tests provided by many institutes free or on some charge. Buy them and solve. In between, nearly in Nov-Dec each institute starts their test series for IIT JEE. Join a good test series. Sit for it regularly. But, never spend time to prepare for test series. Not even on day prior to test date. If you desperately want to read a little, give 1hr -2hr on last night before test series’ test date. You should not spend much time on test series preparation.

Sample tests should be taken by you in the same time duration as for IIT JEE exam. Like this year schedule is Paper 1: 9:00 AM – 12:00 noon and Paper 2: 2:00 PM -5:00 PM. Sit for tests each day at 9:00 AM sharp. Use chair and table for giving exams. Your body should adjust to exam schedule. Between 12:00 to 2:00 test your score for Paper 1. Afterwards, look through solution for incorrect answers. Know where you missed. Then, take your lunch. Lastly, relax a bit. Again at sharp 2:00 PM sit for Paper 2. After exam check your marks. Go through solutions for incorrect questions. Try to analyze where you are failing. In which portion you score most negative marks. If a bit concept update is required go for it. But, don’t go deep study.

After test session, relax for an hour or so. Watch TV. Go to friends home. Else sleep.

At night, go for unsolved problems. These are the problems which are very much similar to IIT JEE type of problems. Many of these problems could be faced by you first time. Try to solve them using all books and materials you have available. This is the last time to increase your rank in IIT JEE. More sincerely you solve more your rank will improve. This single step could give you a gain of around 10 – 15 % for ranking. Believe me.

For 15-20 day, regularly take these tests till last 2 days of exam. For last two days, normally prefer to avoid reading anything. If you can’t, don’t go for deep study and for new concept. Just revise 2-3 times daily every formula and tricks from a collection book normally provided by institutes (like compendium of YG Files).

These are a simple one year plan for repeaters. You may easily view. This method can’t be used by fresher. Last two phases could be used by those repeaters too who had joined any coaching.

If you find anything to share, feel free to do it. I am waiting for your comments.

(Now, I want to share with you my one year which I spend for IIT JEE preparation after 12th board. In appearing exam of IIT JEE I failed to clear IIT JEE screening. I scored 97. While 99 were cut-off marks. Missed screening test by a score less than what a question usually carry.

After all exams are over, I spent two months in enjoyment. I started preparation in July last week, my first mistake. Simultaneously, I joined a test series, my second mistake.

In two months of off-study, I had lost grip on many portions. Also, I usually get lost in test series’ tests held after every 21 days. I get confused whether to prepare for these tests or not, my third and biggest mistake. Overall, for whole year I just able to recover the level where I was at the time of last IIT JEE. In screening exam, I merely pass the test.

During screening and mains exam, I used the last phase discuss above. It helped me a lot and let me to secure around 10000 ranks in mains. Not to mention, I appeared for IIT JEE next year too using experience of the discussed year.)
