IIT JEE: What should be the strategy for repeaters?

IIT is a dream for many students. Many had waited 4-5 years to crack IIT JEE. Some even spent few years in other college, and then came to IIT without any tension about year loss. But, since 2006, IIT JEE has taken few steps to filter genuine quality from repeaters.

IIT JEE committee in 2006 changes few eligibility rules for IIT JEE. These changes allow only those who have passed the qualifying exam not more than one year back. Simply we can say. Maximum two attempts are allowed for IIT JEE to any students.

Normally students, who are not both lucky and brilliant simultaneously, fail to mark an impression in first attempt of IIT JEE. I’m pointing at lucky and brilliant both. Even brilliance can’t guarantee you to be an IITian in first shot. There are lots of complications. Like you have to cover the syllabus in right time, you have to face board exams just few days back of IIT JEE, you have to quickly switch to IIT JEE syllabus after board exam. Not to say all these needs proper timing. Many loose the preparation at last steps not due to brilliance. But, due to so much complications and lack of proper guidance. Just before IIT JEE, many lose their chance to get selected. So, it needs luck with brilliance to pass IIT JEE in first shot.

I will discuss here exactly how you should prepare if you had failed in first appearance of IIT JEE. What should be the strategy? How you should study? When is the right time for pace? When you should join test series? When your revision should start? Should you join any coaching or home preparation is best? I will discuss all these points here. Also, if you want any point to be added by me raise your voice. Use comments section.

First of all, let’s decide whether you need coaching or not. Note it down that you should be associated in IIT JEE coaching once in your three-year duration of IIT JEE preparation. If you have taken any professional coaching for IIT JEE up till 12th. Now, go for home preparation. If you were not associated with coaching during 12th or 11th especially for IIT JEE, it is a good time for you to do so. Do not forget. Coaching is very important to know most about IIT JEE. Especially those who are average do well after coaching. (See this article to know how coaching help different students in IIT JEE preparation.)

One thing I want to urge all. If you think that there is some chance for you to crack IIT JEE. But, less chance in first shot. Then, go for IIT JEE coaching during 11th and 12th. Don’t leave the professional help for post-board duration. Coaching gives you a lot. But, it takes away your energy and also need much mental and physical work. Students sometime get lost in mental and physical strain they undergo during coaching. Also, you will become much more mature about IIT JEE after taking coaching. So, you could study in right way in your final shot. I will discuss more about it later in some other article.

If you are thinking to go for coaching after board exams, then, remember to give good time for self-study. Don’t get lost in assignments and hand-outs provided by your coaching. Solve them. But, also give appropriate time for IIT JEE text-books and standard problem book. Remove confusions related with concepts using full help of coaching system. IIT JEE concentrates more at those points which are loop holes for students. You can do better if you keep in mind above mentioned points. These are enough for you. Remember, coaching will take away most of your time. Still you have to work-hard restlessly.

Now, if you had already taken coaching during 12th or don’t want to join any coaching. These are for you.

After IIT JEE exam or exam period gets over. Don’t waste much time in enjoyment. Re-start your preparation after a gap of not more than 7 days.

When you start the preparation, first go for little analyze. Try to figure out which chapters need improvement and which are your best portions. Also, which book to follow? In this one year of preparation you should concentrate more on clarifying concept by solving more and more problem. Problem should be solved by books which have IIT JEE sort of problems. I would suggest go for Arihant books in Physics and Mathematics. For chemistry, Arihant books are not so much good. Try Schaum series or others like O P Tondon or O P Agrawal for physical chemistry. For Organic strictly go for Solomons & Fryhle. It is best book for Organic chemistry for IIT JEE. Use this book with its solution book. For Inorganic use Arihant. Memorize every reaction type. Go for problems. The more regularly you solve the problems. The more you will improve in Organic or Inorganic Chemistry. Not to mention, not just above books are only best books in the market. But, yeah these are most tested.

If you have material of some top institute of IIT JEE. Refer them too while reading concept from above mentioned books. Try to solve the variety of problems available. The more you get familiar with problem more you will solve the problem in IIT JEE. Remember IIT JEE don’t check your speed. You will have enough time to solve problems to secure good rank in IIT JEE. So, concentrate on practicing more and more problem. Required speed will be acquired just by practice.

Now, I’m going to tell you a very important trick you should use which would help you later in revision. While going through problems, mark the problems which are unsolved, hard or tricky. Even those which you solved, but you want to see them while revision. On an average you will get 10-15 marked questions in 100 you will attempt. Use these questions when you revise. This simple technique will boost up your revision time 2-3 folds. Normally, while revision students get confused from where to start revision. But, with this trick in use, you can just refer theory quickly from somewhere (like Brilliant tutorial provides YG File compendium or FIITJEE provides some books with GMP). Then, go through the problems you had marked earlier. Remember, it’s on to you which problem to mark. Don’t mark just hard problem. Instead, mark the problems in a way which could help you to revise in less time later. So, after solving chapters go through marked problems and see whether you can revise with those problems.

Normally, you should close first phase of detailed study, up till December to January. Then, phase 2, revision by above mentioned way till 20 – 25 days prior to exam date. For phase 2, if time permits you could also use GMP or YG Files. In last phase, solve simulator tests or sample tests provided by many institutes free or on some charge. Buy them and solve. In between, nearly in Nov-Dec each institute starts their test series for IIT JEE. Join a good test series. Sit for it regularly. But, never spend time to prepare for test series. Not even on day prior to test date. If you desperately want to read a little, give 1hr -2hr on last night before test series’ test date. You should not spend much time on test series preparation.

Sample tests should be taken by you in the same time duration as for IIT JEE exam. Like this year schedule is Paper 1: 9:00 AM – 12:00 noon and Paper 2: 2:00 PM -5:00 PM. Sit for tests each day at 9:00 AM sharp. Use chair and table for giving exams. Your body should adjust to exam schedule. Between 12:00 to 2:00 test your score for Paper 1. Afterwards, look through solution for incorrect answers. Know where you missed. Then, take your lunch. Lastly, relax a bit. Again at sharp 2:00 PM sit for Paper 2. After exam check your marks. Go through solutions for incorrect questions. Try to analyze where you are failing. In which portion you score most negative marks. If a bit concept update is required go for it. But, don’t go deep study.

After test session, relax for an hour or so. Watch TV. Go to friends home. Else sleep.

At night, go for unsolved problems. These are the problems which are very much similar to IIT JEE type of problems. Many of these problems could be faced by you first time. Try to solve them using all books and materials you have available. This is the last time to increase your rank in IIT JEE. More sincerely you solve more your rank will improve. This single step could give you a gain of around 10 – 15 % for ranking. Believe me.

For 15-20 day, regularly take these tests till last 2 days of exam. For last two days, normally prefer to avoid reading anything. If you can’t, don’t go for deep study and for new concept. Just revise 2-3 times daily every formula and tricks from a collection book normally provided by institutes (like compendium of YG Files).

These are a simple one year plan for repeaters. You may easily view. This method can’t be used by fresher. Last two phases could be used by those repeaters too who had joined any coaching.

If you find anything to share, feel free to do it. I am waiting for your comments.

(Now, I want to share with you my one year which I spend for IIT JEE preparation after 12th board. In appearing exam of IIT JEE I failed to clear IIT JEE screening. I scored 97. While 99 were cut-off marks. Missed screening test by a score less than what a question usually carry.

After all exams are over, I spent two months in enjoyment. I started preparation in July last week, my first mistake. Simultaneously, I joined a test series, my second mistake.

In two months of off-study, I had lost grip on many portions. Also, I usually get lost in test series’ tests held after every 21 days. I get confused whether to prepare for these tests or not, my third and biggest mistake. Overall, for whole year I just able to recover the level where I was at the time of last IIT JEE. In screening exam, I merely pass the test.

During screening and mains exam, I used the last phase discuss above. It helped me a lot and let me to secure around 10000 ranks in mains. Not to mention, I appeared for IIT JEE next year too using experience of the discussed year.)

IIT JEE: What should be Strategy for Partial Droppers?

Here, by partial droppers, I mean to address those aspirants of IIT JEE which have already taken admission in some college. But, still they want the tag of IIT JEE and they are preparing for IIT JEE along with their regular college course.

I’ve already discussed about the strategies to be used by a repeater for IIT JEE. However, the way of preparation for a partial dropper differs a lot from a normal repeater. Partial droppers face a lot of problems which are hard to overcome. The most basic difference is availability of time. A partial dropper needs to spend at least 6-7 hours daily for their college course. I know not every partial dropper spends 6-7 hour on his or her college course. However, on an average this is the ideal time. Therefore, it’s no brainer that they get overall less study time for IIT JEE preparation. This means they have to use their time in the most optimal way. Along with this they have to create every possible spare time as an opportunity to study.

Apart from this every person have the desire to perform well even if the exam is of less important. Hence, there is an itch to perform well in both IIT JEE and their current college course. This creates mental pressure, especially after every semester or mid semester exams. In normal case a partial dropper score somewhat poorer than a regular student in the college course exam. This in some way hit their ego and transforms them to perform well in the next semester exam. This means, it acts as a strong force of diversion from IIT JEE for partial droppers.

Seeing the friends around enjoying the college life sometimes demotivate from giving ample time for IIT JEE preparation. When partial droppers notice that their friends are enjoying the college life and they are not, even if they can. Sometimes, this works in diminishing their zeal to be an IIT’ian, as somewhere in the mind they fear that they could fail to secure an IIT seat. It is easy to enjoy life in present than to plan to enjoy in the future which is unclear. Overall, a partial dropper needs to be mentally very strong to overcome these problems. The success rate of partial droppers is not very high. So, the first lesson to be successful as a partial dropper is to be strong mentally. If you can take heavy pressure, only then think about preparing for IIT JEE along with your 1st year engineering Course. This period will test you how well you can handle pressure.

A very important fact about IIT JEE applicable to any candidate is that only the time devoted by you on self-study make or breaks your chance to be an IIT’ian. I mean to say coaching or tuitions or any course material just enhances your chances of selection in IIT JEE. They don’t play defining role in the selection. A person can be an IIT’ian even without studying in coaching or reading from GMP. But, one has very less chance to be successful in IIT JEE without lots of self-study. I’m saying here very less chance, not no chance as I’d a friend with me at ISI Kolkata, who used to just pay good attention in the classroom, but still without self-study used to get good marks. He had got around 1100 rank in IIT JEE. Some of his friends from his IIT JEE coaching told me that they never saw him studying at hostel while IIT JEE preparation. Just with the classroom lecture and classwork, he was able to crack IIT JEE. What I want to say was there are exceptions, reciting exceptional people. But, on average this is not possible.

As a partial dropper has to use his time optimally, he can’t afford to study in a coaching. He has to rely only on self-study. Try to find other partial droppers in your institute or hostel or around. Make a group and try to clear your doubts with them every week or every 3-4 days. You can’t afford daily group session as many a times group session result in entertainment session. If a lot of jokes are cracked during the group session, chances are it will attract you just like drug attract a drug addict. So, try to make these group session professional. Doubt clearance is very important as it helps to understand the concept and make them strong. If one tries to clear such doubts by looking in different books, one might clear the doubts. In a way when a doubt is cleared in such way one understands the concept in better way than in doubt clearance session. Also, sometime it happens that when we try to clear our doubt by ourselves, we assume few incorrect things to be correct. Lastly, it takes your precious time too, which is in less reserve. The ideal way to deal with a doubt is to try to clear your doubts yourself for few hours by looking in different books. If you could clear your doubts then good, if you don’t then no problem. In any case, you have read a lot about it. Now, in your next group session discuss it with your friend. If you cleared your doubts, then in group session whatever you understood was true or false will be tested, else, if you didn’t clear your doubts, then, it will be cleared. It also helps in clear the same doubt in your friend if they haven’t noticed that they have any such doubt.

In a doubt session, try to discuss conceptual confusion and not the problem you couldn’t solve. Problems should be solved only by you. Remember, for IIT JEE, it is not important to know how a particular type of problems is solved. Problems which will come might be very new. You need to know how to solve even new type of problems. IIT needs students with innovative mind. So, to be innovative you have to know how give direction to your mind on unknown paths. Solving harder problem with your friend will momentarily help you to understand the concept required to solve it. But, there is always a chance that you could not solve similar problem with little twist. Therefore, clear the doubts related to concept and solve problems by you. For IIT JEE, the best way to strengthen your concept understanding is by solving problems. You don’t mug up the concepts; you understand it by applying it. That’s why such students do well after IIT in every field either CAT or UPSC or any other area. Practical learning makes a wise man; rote learning makes a computer or robot.

Time management is the key to unlock the doors of your success in IIT JEE. I will not discuss how much time you should devote to your IIT JEE or when you should read. This will differ from person to person. I will just give you some facts which will help you to manage your time optimally. The most important thing in managing your time is to prepare a feasible time table. I said feasible as don’t make such a plan which is hard to implement. Your college academic session goes in a fixed time format. So, you might not face problems in preparing a time-table around your college lectures. Give sufficient time to cope with your college studies. A very poor performance in college exams might result in a weak spot in interviews if in unfortunate case you could not clear IIT JEE in your second attempt. So, you have to get average marks to pass. Don’t just ignore college. On an average, I assume 5-6 hours will be the time you will get on week days and 9-10 hours on weekend. On week days try to read in bulk time. Means, it’s better to read 5-6 hours continuously for IIT JEE rather than collection of many 1 and 2 hour durations. This will help you to forget about other problems for some time and lend your mind totally to IIT JEE.

As there is shortage of time, you are not in a position to solve many problems. I will suggest in every 2-3 problems, leave a problem unsolved, if you can think how you would approach the problem and solve it after reading it. In every 2-3 problem leave a problem which is less challenging for you.

After you complete a particular chapter, you should prepare a plan to revise it later. The fact is now after solving the chapter you know which problems are no brainer and which are good and challenging. Mark around 1/3rd or less problems of the topic in such a way that when you revise it even after 6-7 months later. You take very less time to recover all the tactics and methods, you improvised while solving it initially. Whenever, we solve problems from a topic, we tend to develop some special tactics for solving the topic. I’m not talking about magical methods. I’m talking about tactics like using a formula in different way or memorizing the value of some special constants that come repeatedly. These help to solve problem faster, but we have a common tendency to forget these things with time.

Lastly, enroll in a good test series in around December. I liked FIITJEE test series very much. But, you can go with any one that can help you to estimate your improvement. A fact I say always that you don’t need to prepare for each test of the test series. Don’t waste time in preparing for any test of a test series, either it is in the beginning or in the end. Tests are to estimate you in real-time. Even if you get less marks in test series try to be more conscious in the tests next time. But, don’t prepare for it. You need the precious time to keep your IIT JEE preparation in continuity. Never let a gap of a day or two between your preparations.

In the last months of your preparation, i.e. in March or April use the medical excuse to get free from attendance for a month or two. You require this leave as it will help you to summarize your preparation in the best possible way. It’s not mandatory to get a leave by such way. But, if you could get it you can use it for the best.

Above all, be brave. Only brave persons could clear IIT JEE while enrolling in some other regular course. Feel confident that you can do it. Try to keep yourself happy even in the toughest time schedule. Keep your mind as relaxed as possible. Best of luck!

There might be some areas which I might have missed. Please mention those in the comments. I will be pleased to help you.

Hopes Beyond IIT

Students of 10+2 mathematics are crazy about IIT. May be you are one of them too who desperately want to be a part of IIT. But, let me tell you. There is life other than IIT which can be as good as a life with IIT.

Here, I’m giving list of some institutes which can be said as alternative for IIT. This list covers those institutes where students of PCM 12th pass can apply. Some of these are very much around or better than IIT. Have a look:

  1. SCRA:
Special Class Railway Apprentice (SCRA) aka Railway Engineering is an examination conducted by UPSC for selecting candidates suitable for engineering department of Railway. It is a very royal job with large prospects. It is also the toughest exam at 10+2 level. There are just around 10 vacancies each year. Still lot of people sits for its exam. Also, your salary will start just after passing this exam. It is the dream course.
  2. ISI:
Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) is a very old institute of mathematics, statistics, economics and computer science. It is best institute in India for Statistics and Mathematics and second best for Economics (after DSE). The pass-outs from this institute are very much in demand all over world. Placements are better than even IIMs. Above all there are no fees. Instead handsome stipends each month are given to the students. This in my sense is best alternative for IIT. Obviously, many students come to this institute after getting top ranks in IIT JEE. Some leave IIT after getting top ten ranks for ISI.
  3. CA:
For mathematics branch students, CA is not the prime choice. Those who opt for CA after 10+2 with mathematics basically, if they don’t get selected somewhere for engineering. But, CA should not be just seen as a degree for commerce students. Mathematics students have high chances to do better in this course. CA aka Chartered accountant is the high earning job. You may work in a company or set-up your own company for auditing accounts. It is just like law. Every company needs service from a CA. As economy is booming and CA course is tough. This sector will be in more demand than else.
  4. Actuarial:
Actuarial is something very much of same nature as CA. But, have more importance than CA. In India this course is conducted by India Actuarial Society. It is a new field in India. But, demands are very high all over world, not just in India. This course is not for everyone. Only sharp minded people are taken for this course. Basic requirement is mathematics as a subject in 12th with 75% for 10+2 students. 75% marks in mathematics just say the requirement needed for being an actuarial. The most important point, you may study for other course with this. Like engineering or graduation. In fact, if some of your course match with the course of Actuarial. You don’t have to write the exam twice. Your regular course marks are accepted by Actuarial society.
  5. NID:
National Institute of Design (NID) is not a very common name among general students. But, it is a very popular name among those who know even a little about design, graphics or creativity courses in India. This is the best institute to learn about designing. One may just think the need of the students from this institute in market.
  6. NDA:
National Defense Academy (NDA) is a very popular exam at 10+2 level. But, popularity of engineering has lowered the no. of quality students for this exam. Yeah, through this exam you may not earn handsome money after NDA. Also, course is physically a bit tough. But, yeah, the proud to be a soldier of India can never be compared with money. Students now a day seek fun and entertainment during course. That fun is not here. But, still here you will get adventure, high esteem and position in society. Pay is not good. But, perks are good. Overall, those who don’t want to traditional, boring corporate jobs can join Indian Army through this course.
  7. NIFT:
National institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) is a popular brand name. The course here attracts those who want to go in glamor life. No doubt this course needs creativity. Without creativity, you may not perform well. But, yeah this is a high paying and booming sector in India.
  8. NLSIU:
National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is the best institute in India for Law. As economically, India is developing rapidly. Lots of MNCs are coming each year in India. All of them need law personnel. But, students in India are crazy about engineering and management. Other courses don’t get the best quality. So is the case with NLSIU. Students getting here are good but not the best. So, exam is easy to crack with little effort. But, the money after this course is very good.
  9. IIIT:
Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) is a project of Indian government to satisfy the demand of IT professionals in India with quality candidates. Courses here are mainly related to IT or computer science. Seats are few in number. But, competition is not as much as for IIT. Some of IIT conduct separate exam. Some take students from AIEEE. This is best course for computer related if you don’t get selected in IITs or few NITs.
  10. NIT:
National Institute of Technology (NIT) is institutes which were earlier known as Regional Engineering College. These colleges are good, reputed, and old and get good placements too. Earlier, students get admission in these colleges via state engineering examination. Students were not evenly balanced in sort of quality than sorting on the basis of state. Also, as students can’t aim at these institutes directly. Hence, these colleges could not make such a reputation as an IIT. These are premier institutes but not the popular ones. These institutes have infrastructure and all sort of facility to produce best engineers. But, they don’t get the best students.
  11. CMI:
Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) is one of the best institutes in India for Mathematics and Physics. This institute has gained much reputation in very less time. No doubt for research preference this could be on top of your list.
  12. NSHM:
(NSHM) is the best institute in India for Hotel and Hospitability management. This institute gives you high prospect for success with growing demands of Hospitability in India.
  13. Merchant Navy:
Merchant navy is a high paying job. It is course for become a crew member of a ship. The best institute in this field is TS Chanakya which takes students through IIT JEE. But, it has a separate selection process. Other institutes of Merchant Navy also have the same prospect. No doubt if you want to earn real money, Merchant navy should be the best choice.
  14. IISER/NISER:
Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) and National Institute of Science Education Research (NISER) is a project of government to satisfy the scientist need of India. This is a full government funded institutes. You will get handsome stipends to study here. Future prospect is also good. Students from here can easily get admissions anywhere in the world for higher education. Also, prospect in India is good. Scientist are in demand everywhere. Government is thinking to open research gates for private owners in India. So, students from these institutes will be in High demand in near future.
  15. Aeronautics:
Aeronautics is a high paying field. In India, this sector is on boom and is expected to need three fold more professionals in coming 10 years. Best institute to get in this field is some IIT where this course is taught. Like IIT Kanpur. But, there are other institutes too who can give same prospects as aeronautics from IITs. These are IIA Group of Institutions. Know more about it here.

On the whole, if you look closely at the list above. These are the best institutes of their respective fields. Hence, we could conclude easily each field which have high prospect can come in the list above.

Also, Keep this in mind nearly every field is open for mathematics students (except medical). So, not just IIT should be your prime stop. You may go to any of these and become successful. Some will give you high reputation and some will give you high money. Some even both. But, try to think beyond IITs. There are hopes beyond IIT.

Note: I’ll give detail about all these exam in coming future. The details will cover all aspect institute by institute for each class. Stay in touch.
